Corn silage made by fermenting the whole corn plant under plastic and a fresh crop of corn to become silage in the field behind the heap is used to make up part of the cow's diet and provide more nutrients than just feeding them dried corn. Each cow consumes about 90 pounds of feed and 25 gallons of water a day while they are lactating.

MIlking cups attach milking machine to the cow in a process that takes about seven minutes and generally procures between 60 and 150 pounds of milk per cow every eight hours. The milk fresh from the cow is about 100 degrees and is sent to cool at about 36 degrees. This process kills most of the bacteria and keeps the milk fresh for processing and pasturization at a different site.
