Corn silage made by fermenting the whole corn plant under plastic and a fresh crop of corn to become silage in the field behind the heap is used to make up part of the cow's diet and provide more nutrients than just feeding them dried corn. Each cow consumes about 90 pounds of feed and 25 gallons of water a day while they are lactating.
